How to make a bench cushion with staple gun: Things you will Need to Make DIY Bench Cushions
- Staple Gun (Our recommended staple gun is the Arrow Fastener T50)
- Measuring tape
- Spray adhesive
- Chalk or marker
- Plan desk or workbench for accurate lines.
- Foam or other padding material
- Fabric Sheet
Step 1 Measuring the Fabric Sheet
The first step is to take the Fabric sheet and measure it carefully. Proper measurement is very crucial because it will save your time, efforts, and money. Choosing the fabric is also a challenging task for people who are new to DIY projects.
There are a number of fabric materials available in the market. You should choose according to your needs and desire. For your information, there are the following types of fabric material which is used normally for bench cushions.
If you prefer beauty then silk is the best option for you. Silk fabrics are usually but they are not sturdy enough. If you have kids or pets in your home then you should avoid silk at all. It is because due to their delicate nature silk is pretty easy to get damage.
Linen is also one of the most used fabric for bench cushions. The only con of linen is that it is not super durable. Though it is a bit durable than the Silk it is still not the best all-weather fabric.
It is known for resisting fading and pilling and it is also able to resist abrasion. It has much better results against these problems than cotton.
Cotton is one of the most reliable fabrics if it is blended with other fabrics. This Cotton alone resists wear, fading, and piling. But it is prone to stains and wrinkling. It can be blended with fabric and linen to increase its durability.
Leather is one of the most remarkable fabrics. It is widely used for dining chairs, sofas, couches, and bench cushions. You can easily wash and clean if even if it gets stained. It is also virtually stain resistant. People who have children and pets should always go for leather fabrics.
Step 2 Mark the Exact Measurements
once you have measured the fabric completely and you are sure about it. The next step is to mark these measurements. Marking allows more precise cutting and it will minimize the risk of running low on fabric. It will also help you in making accurate size cushions for your bench.
You can do this either with a pen, pencil, or even colored chalk. Make sure these marks are not easily removable during the cushion making process. Also, take care not to put too dark marks because it will be visible after the completion of the project.
It will spoil the beauty of the cushions. Also, make sure you are keeping the fabric on a plan surface such as a table or your workbench. It will ensure accurate marking and minimize the risk of error.
Step 3 The Cutting Process
Once you have successfully marked the measurements then the next step is to cut them carefully. This step will decide the clarity of your cushions and how it will look. You should cut both covering fabric and the padding fabric with precision.
Ideally, thin mattress paddings are recommended due to their soft and comfortable nature. However, you can use anything you want depending on how thick you want the cushion to be. You can use a paper cutting knife or anything sharper to ensure clear cuts.
Step 4 Covering the Foam/Mattress Paddings
Put your covering material on a flat surface whether it be ground or a table. Straighten all the sheets and then place your mattress pads or the material that you want to use on top of it. Once you are satisfied with the layout start putting some spray adhesive on the plywood. After spraying adhesive on the plywood put it on top of the mattress pads.
The purpose of putting adhesive on the plywood is to keep everything intact. It will prevent slipping of the mattress and spoiling the shape of your mattress.
Step 5 The Stapling Part
Once all the parts are aligned and you are satisfied with it the next part is to staple them all. You can use the Arrow Fastener T50 because it is quite powerful yet easy to use. The staple gun will make sure you complete your project without any issue. You will be amazed with its results later. Load your Arrow fastener T50 Staple gun with staples.
Make sure you have evenly distributed the cover. Use the Arrow Fastener T50 Staple gun to staple up the sheet to the plywood. Now you might be thinking we could use glue instead of a staple gun right? There is a reason for that, most glues are usually water-soluble and they will wear out with time.
This can result in damaging the cushion after some time. However, if you use a staple gun it will remain intact. Unless you try to pry open the staples with something sharp and intentionally it will remain on the plywood for longer. Now if you have successfully followed the given procedure then congratulations. You have made yourself a brand new cushion for bench and that too with a staple gun.
If you are still not satisfied with Staple Gun then you should add some glue but there is no need for that.
